In History we are studying the cold war. We looked at a slideshare that had some questions and analysis of the war, and we watched a video which talked about the Yalta conference. We had a TASK to do today.
1. Why did the wartime alliance fell apart?
Before WW2, USA, as other European countries, hated communism and were afraid of the latter. Do not forget the Red Scare, Zacco and Vanzzeti and USA and Britain trying to stop the Russian Revolution. Russia’s point of view about USA wasn’t so friendly either. Also, do not forget the Nazi-Soviet Pact with Germany, which tensed almost all Europe and USA. After the war, the two possible remaining superpowers were USA and the USSR, so they started to compete. USA wanted to stay capitalist and Russia wanted to stay communist, but they were both afraid of each other.
2. What were the major differences between the superpowers?
The major difference was their system if government and economy. USA was capitalist and the USSR was communist.
3. What was the importance of Yalta and Postdam conferences?
The war was bound to finish and it could be seen that the Allies were going to win it. Germany, the Nazis and Hitler would be defeated. Also Japan and company. The Allied leaders met at those conferences to decide the future of the world, especially Germany’s. These meetings were very important.
4. Which were the roles of Stalin and Truman?
In the Yalta conference Stalin said that Russia would join the war against Japan and the other leaders invited her to join the United Nations. Truman appeared in the second conference, at Postdam. Truman was angry because of the reparations and because a communist government was being put up in Poland.
