A synapseis what happens when chemical signals pass from one cell to another. It occurs in the synaptic cleft, which is the tiny gap between the pre-synaptic neuron and the post-synaptic neuron.
Every pre-synaptic neuron has vesicles inside, near the pre-synaptic membrane. Each vesicle contains thousands of neurotransmitters. When the pre-synaptic neuron gets “excited” by an axon potential it’s vesicles diffuse through the cell membrane and release their content into the synaptic cleft.
Following, the tiny receptors of the post-synaptic neuron interact with the neurotransmitters. These ones bind into the receptors and cause an action as result. Likelihoodcan be increased and the cell becomes activated firing an action potential or it can be decreased.
Finally, the neurotransmitters molecules left in the synaptic gap drift away by diffusion, or go back to the vesicles to be reused by a process called re-uptake, or are broken down by enzymes and component parts go back to the pre-synaptic neuron.
Pato left us this entry with activities for us to do during our virtual period of Literature.
Both extracts are written in first person narrator. Both texts talk about an imperfection on the wall and how that imperfection bothers and plays with their minds. In The Yellow Wallpaper the woman writes “It is dull enough to confuse the eye in following, pronounced enough to constantly irritate, and provoke study…” . She feels uncomfortable with that wallpaper. The narrator of The Mark On The Wall writes ” I looked up through the smoke of my cigarette and my eye lodged for a moment upon the burning coals”. She found the mark on the wall so annoying that she couldn’t stop staring at it. Neither narrator could stop staring at it. Although these things have a negative image at the beginning, the narrators can’t stop looking at them. “When you follow the lame, uncertain curves for a little distance…”. The woman of the wallpaper even though found it dull and irritating, began to look deeply into it.
The woman in The Yellow Wallpaper believes there is a woman trying to break free from the paper. “It is like a woman stooping down and creeping about behind that pattern”.
The woman is in control of her life. She can choose whether to stand up to deeply watch the mark or stay and she decides to stay. “I might get up, but if I got up and looked at it, ten to one I shouldn’t be able to say for certain”. What she is not in control of, are her possessions. Her wall for example. There is a mark on her wall and she doesn’t know where it came from. “…how very little control of our possessions we have…”.
In our first Biology lesson we learnt a little bit about the excretion system and the kidneys which are key organs during this process. This is an entry with activities we have done and things to remember.
