The Yellow Wallpaper -Virtual Period

Pato left us this entry with activities for us to do during our virtual period of Literature.

  1. Both extracts are written in first person narrator. Both texts talk about an imperfection on the wall and how that imperfection bothers and plays with their minds. In The Yellow Wallpaper the woman writes «It is dull enough to confuse the eye in following, pronounced enough to constantly irritate, and provoke study…» . She feels uncomfortable with that wallpaper. The narrator of The Mark On The Wall writes » I looked up through the smoke of my cigarette and my eye lodged for a moment upon the burning coals». She found the mark on the wall so annoying that she couldn’t stop staring at it. Neither narrator could stop staring at it. Although these things have a negative image at the beginning, the narrators can’t stop looking at them.  «When you follow the lame, uncertain curves for a little distance…». The woman of the wallpaper even though found it dull and irritating, began to look deeply into it.
  2. The woman in The Yellow Wallpaper believes there is a woman trying to break free from the paper. «It is like a woman stooping down and creeping about behind that pattern».
  3. The woman is in control of her life. She can choose whether to stand up to deeply watch the mark or stay and she decides to stay. «I might get up, but if I got up and looked at it, ten to one I shouldn’t be able to say for certain». What she is not in control of, are her possessions. Her wall for example. There is a mark on her wall and she doesn’t know where it came from. «…how very little control of our possessions we have…».
